In an interview Adventurous artist Bryan Lewis Saunders told wired magazine that he has decided to make his own portraits for rest of his life so he could “die knowing the truth that he tried to experience as much as possible when he was alive.” He created nearly 9930 self-portraits to date.
Including the tragedy Saunders experimented with all the things like social problems, sleep, pain, personality assessment, and now he moved on to drugs. With legal and illegal drugs he experiments on both, once in full effect, he sits down and starts to draw. The results are incredible each time with different drugs. Some are psychedelic, others are bizarre, but it’s extremely interesting to take a look into the mind of someone under the influence of a particular drug that chemically affects certain parts of the brain.
This risky and experimental art project idea came to him after “…experiencing drastic changes in [his] environment, [he] looked for other experiences that might profoundly affect [his] perception of self.”
Saunders’s brain was mild damaged by the effects of all the drugs so he stopped.
His creations are simply stunning. This is in no way condoning drug use, but there is something fascinating about looking into a chemically altered mind to witness the way he perceives himself.
